The neoliberal government fell and its President was rejected by the people with an unprecedented 87,52% in the national referendum, making him the most unpopular leader since the last days of Ceausescu. However, the Social-Democrats made an outrageous compromise in order to get to power and the outcome is a cohabitation that lets one see clearly the dominant ideology behind seemingly contradictory party lines. These events have channelled the emergent critical consciousness towards a general cynicism in relation to the political class and the political itself. Furthermore, five years after the onset of the crisis of capitalism in its very cores, the big powers are drawing new geopolitical power lines in the region, thanks to which Eastern Europe finds itself split in between the European Union and the Euroasian Union. In my intervention I would like to present an overview of the situation of the left in Romania from an internationalist perspective, accompanied by proposals for strategies of action and reflection for the independent left, through CriticAtac and the regional platform LeftEast. Ovidiu Tichindeleanu is a philosopher and social theorist living in Chişinău and Cluj, writing on critical social theory, decolonial thought, materialism, alternative epistemologies, and the cultural history of postcommunism.
